Work commissioned by HM Treasury and the Department for Transport led to a review of accounting, management and finance mechanisms for local authority transport infrastructure.andnbsp;andnbsp;The Code was the final result of this and was launched following a period of consultation. Highways are a major asset for local government and for the country as a whole and yet measuring, maintaining and accounting for them has been beset with difficulties and a lack of consistency.andnbsp;andnbsp;The Code requires each authority to develop a single set of financial information about their assets that is robust and consistent between authorities.andnbsp; Use of the Code will facilitate reliable, evidence based asset management, more effective long term planning and give potential to deliver efficiency savings and service improvements.andnbsp;andnbsp;It will also produce financial information that meets the requirements of Whole of Government Accounts (WGA).
